A group that promotes farming in the mountains is now helping to get fresh food to families in need.

Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) has created a new initiative called the Appalachian Farms Feeding Families program.

The goal is to get fresh produce and other farm products to food banks and other programs.

The first phase focuses on rural communities that are farther from sources of food.

Staff say they eventually want to be able to serve every county in Western North Carolina and to make sure farmers have somewhere for this year's crops to go.

"Wanting to make sure we get fresh food to people who need it but also making sure that farmers are fairly compensated," Molly Nicholi with ASAP said. "We have very generous farmers in our community, many are able and are donating to food relief efforts."
