5G: The Latest News & Updates

Several times per week, I scour the internet for the latest 5G information that I consider newsworthy. Below is an organized dump of all the information you need to know to stay on track with how 5G is progressing around the globe.

While some companies are starting 5G trials in new cities, others are announcing when customers can order their new service, and some businesses are releasing new ideas for how 5G can change the way we live.

Compared to 4G, 5G availability is limited right now to relatively few locations. However, many companies are constantly expanding to launch a full-blown, wide-reaching network for customers to use.

2023

• September 28: Hewlett Packard Enterprise announces that it has deployed an integrated private 5G and Wi-Fi network at the 2023 Ryder Cup.
• September 19: AST SpaceMobile demonstrates space-based 5G connectivity by placing a call from Hawaii to Spain using AT&T spectrum and AST SpaceMobile’s BlueWalker 3 test satellite.
• September 13: Switzerland to release 3.4-3.5 GHz band for private 5G from 2024.
• September 12: Orange Jordan establishes first private 5G network in Kingdom for Aqaba Container Terminal.
• September 8: UK's EE boosts 5G coverage on London Underground.

• March 30: Polish mobile operator, Plus, reaches 20 million people with its 5G network, which now covers around 1,000 cities.
• March 24: Brazilian ISP, Unifique, plans to launch 5G in June.
• March 17: Virgin Media O2 becomes the last of the four primary 5G providers in the UK to deploy service on the London Underground.

5G Phones and Other Hardware

Essentially all new smartphones come with 5G abilities now. Some mobile carriers are offering 5G hotspots so that customers can get on the new network with their 4G devices.

A new era of 5G-enabled products is beginning. A few practical use cases for 5G include interconnected smart cities, mobile extended reality, and device-to-device communication.

• July 17: Germany's Rhine-Neckar is testing 5G-based emergency care.
• May 2: Nokia unveils first CE-certified 5G automated drone-in-a-box solution.
• April 27: Singapore mobile operator M1 announces 5G telemedicine service that uses drones to send medical supplies.
  
• January 30: Walmart's 5G-capable delivery drones currently use LTE, but that's "subject to change as 5G networks continue to evolve domestically."

2022

• December 23: Bharti Airtel announces that they've carried out India's first 5G-driven AI-guided colonoscopy trial with Apollo Hospitals.
• November 30: UScellular showcases 5G in Missouri using rural antennas connected to a cell tower over a mile away. The test included a video call streamed to over 20 participants that simulated remote education, work, and telemedicine.
• September 28: AT&T partners with Ford to bring 5G connectivity to 2023 Ford Super Duty models.

5G Research and Other News

5G isn't yet as ubiquitous as 4G, but that doesn't stop businesses from planning how they can capitalize on it. Companies are developing ideas on how they can use a 5G network or device; some could even prove to be a good investment if you get in early.
