Biography

Talking about his new album Ancestral Memories, Yosvany Terry explains: “This is a special opportunity to express my grandmother’s Haitian heritage with people who speak the same language.” With grant support from the French–American Jazz Exchange Program, the Cuban–American saxophonist and the French pianist Baptiste Trotignon co–lead an exciting program of original music that captures the rhythms, melodies, and harmonies of New Orleans, French Louisiana, and the Caribbean, re–imagined through 21st century aesthetics and a jazz sensibility. Ancestral Memories is the successor to Yosvany Terry’s New Throned King, which received a GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album. “In recent years, along with a few other bandleaders of similar background, Yosvany Terry has helped reframe the sound of Afro–Cuban jazz in New York, reaching for a flexibly cerebral, harmonically advanced and culturally resonant kind of fusion.” (The New York Times)
