Summer Sunday Swaps!
Three Joint Worships Planned with Admiral Congregational UCC: July 29, August 12 & 19
On Sunday, July 29, the Alki UCC congregation is invited up the hill a few blocks to worship with Pastor Andrew Conley-Hobson and all our friends at Admiral UCC, 4320 SW Hill.

On Sundays, August 12 & 19 the Admiral congregation has been invited to join us for worship. Visiting Pastor Bruce Wilson is leading worship.

About Pastor Andrew
Andrew Conley-Holcom took a roundabout way to the ministry, starting first as a public school teacher before finding a calling in genocide studies and violence prevention education. He has worked as a youth director, a conflict management workshop facilitator, and an advocate for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

He received his M.A. in Anthropology from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA and his M.Div. from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA. He was the first male M.Div. student to earn the Women's Studies in Religion Certificate from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA.

Andrew and wife Leann Conley-Holcom recently celebrated the birth of their son, Asher Finnigan Conley-Holcom, on Thursday March 22, 2018 at 6:42 am at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Tacoma. Asher's proud grandparents are Maggie and Ginny Conley and Chuck and Gayle Holcom. We are so grateful you are here, Asher!
Helping Neighbors in Need through Alki UCC Outreach
Alki UCC is a participating member of the Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), an affiliation of West Seattle faith groups. We work on educating ourselves on issues of poverty, homelessness, trafficking, immigration, etc., and are big social advocates in the community. We frequently support the efforts of The West Seattle Helpline and St Vincent de Paul to keep people in their homes with rent, utility or job assistance. Here are a few examples of how Alki UCC, via WIN, has helped make a big difference in people's lives:

Christy
lives in her vehicle and is known by Officer Todd, a westside Seattle police officer who works w/iththe homeless. He is a frequent poster to NextDoor so many know of him and his good works. Officer Todd let us know that Christy needed her tabs renewed so she wouldn't be towed. She also needed to pay her parking tickets and get an emissions test. Officer Todd believes she is someone who will come out OK if given a little attention and support. St Vincent de Paul and WIN said "yes" to Officer Todd and Christy, so she is now living legally, free and clear, in her car.

Sarah
was paid by the state to be a caregiver for her mother; she also cared for her sister for many years. Her mother passed in early spring, leaving Sarah with the funeral and other debts. Her sister is not disabled enough for the state to pay Sarah for care, so her only income source has ended. The West Seattle Helpline has assisted the sisters in catching up with their rent/utilities and connected them to services and possible job opportunities for Sarah. WIN churches and Alki UCC also provided assistance. Sarah has landed a new position as a caregiver, and the sisters are now current on their bills and, most importantly, able to stay in their home.

Marina and her husband and two children
are asylum seekers from El Salvador. Since Asylum seekers are not eligible for government aid, the couple worked a variety of jobs to support their children. They would like to settle in one place so that their kids can attend school. The Church Council of Greater Seattle has asked WIN churches to pitch in to help pay their first and last deposit on an apartment so this hard working family can proceed on the long journey to citizenship.

Kyle
is a young adult employed as a waiter at minimum wage. Through a series of financial setbacks, including traveling out of state to take care of his ailing parents, he fell behind in his rent and has an eviction notice. The Helpline was able to cover half the rent and is working with the landlord to hold off on the eviction. Alki UCC has also contributed to keep this young man in his home. The good news is that he has found a new job at a higher wage and benefits, but holding back the eviction is still an issue.

If you would like to help either Marina and or Kyle, you can contribute directly to the West Seattle Helpline (designate "for Kyle's rent"), or The Church Council of Greater Seattle
(designate "Aslylee Family of 4 Housing Fund").

Your generous contributions to Outreach here at Alki UCC will help people like Christy, Sarah, Kyle and Marina to stay in their homes.

Bless and thank you all for your donations!  — Cinda Stenger

Jason Huynh Solo from Last Sunday Posted Online
Several people alerted the Church Office this week about choir member Jason Huynh's standout musical offering during worship last Sunday.

Check out the video either on YouTube or Facebook.

Jason writes:
Working off the theme “love your neighbor,” I considered “One Tin Soldier” an apt choice given the current state of the Union.

I assumed this song would immediately trigger childhood memories for some in the congregation and elicit familiar nods — “ah that song! of course! I love that song!”

It’s not a typical church tune, but the storytelling and ironic twist at the end were perfectly suited to Alki’s sensibilities. Not satisfied to leave it at that, I took advantage of my moment in the pulpit to add my own statement at the end.

“Go ahead and split of families,
go ahead and stack the courts.
Do it in the name of business,
nothing further to report.
There won’t be any allies standing,
come the judgment day,
on the blood morning after…
What would Jesus say?”
